Smart technologies are relying on complex functionality, advanced power management, wireless connectivity and wide area network integration. Providing a battery lifetime in the range of several years for standalone embedded systems is an engineering challenge, for both the hardware layer and the software running on it. Nowadays, projects dealing with SoC architectures targeting low power wireless communications have become increasingly popular, while designing solutions around BLE, NB-IoT, Zigbee, ANT, Thread, or LoWPAN has become a de-facto standard.
